Black lights are a handy tool for anybody assessing the condition of an antique. Black lights use ultraviolet (UV) light to illuminate items containing phosphors, which are fluorescent powders that glow when exposed to UV light. Many newer paints contain phosphors, while older ones do not. Therefore, by using a black light, you can detect forgeries or repairs that would be hidden to the naked eye. In addition to phosphors, black lights can detect other chemicals as well. For example, chemical bleaches and dyes used in paper since the 1950s will fluoresce under black light.
